Little Star
by John Ajvide Lindqvist
This is the most disappointing book I have read in a long time. I love a good horror novel, and Lindqvist had earned my respect and admiration with "Let the Right One In." However, nothing he has written since then has matched the power of his first novel. "Little Star" had promise, and I have to admit that I was riveted to the story until the very end, but the book did not deliver. The book is chock full of gratuitous violence, and there is never an explanation for it- in fact, Lindqvist makes a point to choose multiple innocent characters to become victims of violence and murder for no reason whatsoever. The main characters in this story are extremely mentally disturbed, and while they start out with some redeeming qualities in the beginning, I was left feeling completely disgusted by all of them. I have never read a story that described in detail the deaths of innocent people with such relish, almost joy. I kept reading the book in hopes that it would redeem itself, but it never did and I actually felt physically sick when I finished it. I will not be picking up any more of this author's books.
