Left Drowning – Lélegezz velem! by Jessica Park

4.0

Blythe McGuire struggles to make it day after day after her parents died. She drowns her misery in alcohol and simply tries to hold her head above water.
Then fate stirs her life in a different direction to the Shepherd family. First Sabin then his brother Chris show her a piece of life she forgot about.
It seems like this peculiar family of four siblings, and especially the oldest, Chris can save her from herslef and her grief.
But what about him? Who's going to save Chris from his past? Who's going to save the Shepherd family when all four of them is broken?

This book is a very complicated story about healing and battling the demons of the past. When Blythe's life intertwines with the siblings' she is left fighting not one but two horrible pasts. And the Shepherds' might be worse than anything else.

I loved the characters! The different kinds of struggles they seem to battle every day and the coping mechanisms that prevent them from ever being truly happy is quite disturbing to see.
My absolute favourite was Sabin who seemed the realest of them. His changing moods show how much he suffers and he gets a whole book after this.
I did not always understand Blythe and her choices but her strange faith explains it all. Chris was... complicated and terrified most of the time. He struggled the most to protect his siblings and it took a huge toll on him.
The twins are interesting as they seem the most sheltered but the past has its mark on them too.

This is a beutiful story, though I sometimes thought it was too long. There were just too much inner speculations for my liking. The translation had a lot of faults and I think it took away some of the seriousness, unforunately but I don't judge books on the transaltion. Despite these flaws I can't and won't deny the weight of this story.

Read if you need something to think about.
