The September House by Carissa Orlando

5.0

Sometimes the best book at the right time comes along, and this one was it for me. I was trying to get a book with the right amount of spooky vibes, with excellent characters and a riveting plot. This hit all the right notes for me. I liked the voice of this story as well.

Most adult books aren’t written in first person, and it’s something I really enjoy. When it’s done well, I think it’s easier to see the main character’s perspective. Even so, there was a small part of me that wondered why Margaret doesn’t just move.

Margaret and Hal moved into the home of their dreams after being renters for decades. The only problem is that their house is haunted. Fredricka was actually an interesting ghost/friend/live-in free worker with a horrible gash in her face. The others are mostly children. One, Elias, has fangs and a penchant for biting.

Every September the ghosts go into overdrive. This is their fourth September, and Margaret’s husband has decided to leave for the month. Their daughter Katherine is concerned, and she’s determined to come to town to find him. Margaret is trying to hide the mischievous ghosts from her daughter.

With a lot of horror and some dark humor, this won’t be a novel for everyone. But I for one really enjoyed the entire ride.
