Maybe I'm jaded, but I read this now as a story told to a kid about losing their best toy at a sensitive time.
At a younger age, I remember reading it as encouragement that suffering can yield rewards.
In any case, I finally decided 'skin' means 'suede', and now I'm moderately less creeped out about who the rabbit sat up talking to for all those nights.
