I was not looking forward to reading this book after learning it was told from Nesta’s POV, but it was so much better than I expected.

While the pace of the book is mild, I enjoyed every scene. I enjoyed the constant switch in POV from Nesta to Cassian, and the joining of Nesta’s story with the Inner Court’s problems.

Nesta is such a relatable character for me and others who have suffered. This book follows her journey to work past her unhealthy coping skills—including alcoholism, hyper sexuality, and impulse spending—and gives insight to the struggle it takes to get to a better place. It might be set in a fantasy realm, but the story couldn’t be more human.

Nesta may be a dislikable character for many, but the person she becomes is an honorable one. She is as close to a powerful, independent female protagonist as you’ll get. On par with Aelin from Throne of Glass.
