The Heiress at Sea by Christi Caldwell
4.0

Lady Cassia McQuoid aches to see more of the world beyond the walls of her home. When she disguises herself as a man and stows away on a ship, she meets a handsome stranger. Lord Nathaniel Ellsby, naval privateer and the heir to the duchy of Roxburghe after the unexpected death of his older brother, aspires to make one final voyage of freedom before getting neck-deep in his duties. That’s the plan until he meets the disguised deckhand (Cassia).

I try to avoid comparing books in a series to each other because every book can be special in its own way, but I did find this book less predictable than TDA, which made it more interesting. What also helped was that the stakes were higher in this one; it’s Nathan’s last chance to do something he enjoys before he devotes himself to his ducal responsibilities that he never expected he’d have. He finds himself falling in love, but now has the fear of losing her to the dangerous mission he’s in as well as his father’s expectations of him.

I’ll admit that Cassia’s character didn’t quite make an impression on me at first. She was naïve, for example having issues interpreting sarcasm, crying very easily, but that’s to be expected if one lives a sheltered life as she describes.
