Washington Black by Esi Edugyan

5.0

George Washington Black, Wash, is a young boy and a slave on sugar plantation when he is taken in by the eccentric brother of the owner. When Wash is falsely implicated in the death of a white man, the two of them flee. The tale of Wash’s life unfolds slowly, mesmerizing even when it is brutal or violent. The layers of implications of both his personal situation and the situation of all former slaves are complex and slowly revealed. Beautifully done.
