The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger

5.0

Better than the movie. But i still loved the movie. Mostly i loved that it was "cute and sweet" tripe that all YA is these days. Puritanical and ridiculously devoted to the Virginity. That great male god that dominates the majority of the "themes" of other YA books i have been disappointed to read. The characters seem more realistic, and i can identify with the protagonist's viewpoints. Most female YA protags are insipid waifs. Uninteresting paragons of feminine virtue or a ridiculous parody of the "fallen" woman. Bianca is neither of those things. Shes just a fucked-up normal girl looking for her own piece of mind...I liked that. She didnt do dramatic and self destructive things like stop eating, or throw herself off cliffs, or do drugs, or throw herself to the wolves, or have unprotected sex. She was assertive and safe. She makes mistakes, yes, but they are understandable, and she is introspective enough to identify her behaviors and change them, but remain true to herself.

People make a big deal about the sex. OOOOooo young woman has sex, uses a condom, takes birth control! LIKES HAVING SEX! ORGASMS!!!!! It is the destruction of society and not a fit topic for youths! Bullshit. The whole point is that she learns and grows and identifies that sex is not necessarily bad and it is not necessarily a solution to emotional problems.

Also, people commenting on feminist aspects of the book dont really understand feminism.
