A solid "mehhh" (ha ha get it)

This is a book that doesn't know what it wants to be. It starts off as gothic horror, sliding into campy thriller, takes a left into environmentalism and wage gaps, then degrades into C tier slasher movie before ending off with a very YA feel good message about belonging. I got whiplash from the amount of times the genre switched up and I could STILL see the obvious plot twist coming.

The only thing this book has going for it was the reveal of the cult, and even that could only take it so far. The main character leaves her cult for some unexplained reason when she is clearly treated like a queen, her mother is a typical cold bitch that clearly still loves her child but then never had her heroic last minute moment, there's some inane romantic sub-plot, and all in all it felt very YA with how character relationships were handled.

Black Sheep had some glimmers of brilliance creeping around the edges of the book but ultimately fell through as a result of too much plot and genre meandering. It started off quite strong but shot downhill fast after the "twist" and from then on I was just riding it out to see how badly this book ends.
