The story started a little slowly, but picked up throughout the book. I was a bit annoyed by the FMC’s self-sacrificing nature. But I became invested in the mystery of Johnny’s life and death as the details were revealed. I was also invested in the James-Micah second chance romance (one of my favorite tropes). But the author has an annoying tendency to end a chapter right at a cliffhanger, and then jump ahead in time and skip the part you were really wanting to read. That annoyed me throughout the book. Overall, a really solid mystery/romance with a touch of magical realism with just a few annoying qualities.
