Babel by R.F. Kuang
5.0
This was my most anticipated read of the year and it did not disappoint in any way. Kuang’s brutal and interrogative style which grew throughout her Poppy Wars trilogy has now radiantly blossomed in Babel with rich characters, accesible academic themes, and a story that questions and rails against colonization, empire, and capitalism at every turn - even while living inside the belly of the beast. I gasped, I teared up, I laughed, I stayed up late into the night reading (just one more chapter!), I was put through the wringer and politely asked for more. I will be hard pressed to find another book I love as much as this one and I’m going to need some time to process. But I can’t recommend it enough - if you love language, dark magic, complex characters, and if your heart and mind are ready then I say pick up a copy today and get lost in the dangerous, wondrous world of Babel!
