This book is better than the last one but still has some of the same flaws.
Pros: Love how Kowal portrays the community nature of science. Every problem is solved by a fleet of smart scientists. The mystery nature of this book is really engaging and Nicole is a fascinating main character. Her beinga spy makes so much sense and I love how she ended up becoming president.
Cons: There’s still a lot of attempts to tackle 1960s in a way that I find very heavy handed. It’s like “hey racism is bad and everyone was racist” in a way that’s feels not well integrated. At least in this one the narrator isn’t lectured to about it for most of the book.
Additionally it drives me nuts that both Elma and Nicole have deeply debilitating conditions that should not allow them to be astronauts. It’s not a girl power, astronauts are normal people vibe, it is this woman has anorexia to the extent where she absolutely should not be in space. It hurts the pathos of your argument that women make great astronauts too when they lie about their health all the time and then it actively ends up impacting their effectiveness.
