The Practice: Shipping Creative Work by Seth Godin
5.0
Like all great Godin books, this one contains so many thought-provoking nuggets on each page that it is not really possible to read it in two or three sittings. No, this book works better as a daily meditation, something to keep handy to open randomly whenever a message from the universe is needed.
As I thumb back through my copy, I note that nearly every page has underlining and margin notes, jogging my memory of each particular bit. I am sure that if I studied a little harder, I could detect a thesis and follow the case Godin is making, but to me that is far less important than the way The Practice makes me feel: Empowered, inspired, motivated, ready to put myself out there, to bravely hit send on work I have created, to keep trying and trying until I achieve my goals.
The Practice is a solid part of the complete body of Godin's work, another example of Godin's master talent of introducing people to themselves. The hundreds of specific points raised, examples shared, and advice given are only paving bricks for the road to full expression and personal success. Godin is the good angel who whispers "you got this" when energy sags, fear takes over, and failures seem endless. The Practice is trying what might not work, forging ahead, shipping creative work others might not appreciate. The Practice is about focusing on the process and letting the outcome be.
Godin says the magic of the creative process is that there is no magic, but I respectfully disagree on this. There is magic on every page of The Practice. If you are not sure which Godin book to pick up first, this would be a good choice. Highly recommended for those who have yet to make their own ruckus.
