A writer with a breakout bestseller goes on a torturous book tour. Occasionally accompanied by a young boy who is invisible to everyone except the writer. Is the boy real? The writers get interview tips, marketing tips, and a whirlwind book tour. The story seems to be a commentary on his previous breakthrough bestseller, The Returned. This book deals explicitly with race, whereas the earlier book did not.

Chapters alternate between the author's book tour and a young boy. The boy witnesses his father's death at the hands of a policeman. His uncle is also almost killed. The child learns to make himself invisible to avoid harm. Is this the same child following along with the author or just another figure of his imagination?

A very intense and funny book. It sources opportunities for black writers in the publishing industry, police brutality, and the need to disappear at times.
