Akata Witch
by Nnedi Okorafor
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this wonderfully built fantasy. First off, this is a LOT. Sunny, the main character, is Nigerian but was born in the U.S. Her family has been back in Nigeria since she was nine, and she stands out because she is albino. But when she befriends a guy at school and his neighbor, who is…homeschooled, she is thrust into the world of the Leopard People. There, she finds that what she thought was her biggest weakness is a gift, and learns of her heritage and a new magical world. With a serial killer on the loose, she and her new friends are tasked with stopping him. But with such raw powers, can they make it out alive? There was more magical world building and less hunting of serial killers, which reeled me in, but I fell in love with the characters and will probably switch to audio for the remainder of the series (I really need to know how everything is actually pronounced). Hand to readers in grades 7+.
