Although intended for a middle grade audience, I think that readers of all ages would find this novel hauntingly good. This book takes a surprisingly dark turn and touches on a range of social and political issues (including racism, sexism, class inequality, disability, single parenting, and policing without feeling preachy or like it's just ticking boxes. The novel's premise isn't overly complicated or overly simplified and the time travel mechanics aren't overly explained. There are a lot of characters but they are distinctive and all serve a purpose to advance the plot. I'm so glad I gave this one a chance.
