The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

3.0

I've had Discworld recommended to me several times, but people always seemed to recommend starting with later books instead of the first. I can now see why. The Color of Magic has excellent surreal, satirical humor a la Monty Python, but the plot is a lot. It comes at you at a hundred mph and never slows down. It's also incredibly disjointed. The book is broken into four sections and each one feels like it's essentially its own story that's just loosely connected to the other three.

It's quite possible that the book will improve on rereads, but for now, I'm giving it 3 stars. I get the feeling that people are right to recommend starting with a different book and I'll probably do just that in the somewhat near future. The Color of Magic may not have won my heart, but it does have me intrigued and willing to give this world another shot.
