It is times like these that half star ratings would be helpful. This book is a solid 4.5 star fantasy novel. I would be hard pressed to articulate where the remaining .5 star could have been picked up in my reading experience. I know that it is something intangible and not overly related to the text--as is--in the novel. Either way, I enjoyed my reading of Blood Song.

Brutal, precise, unexpected, brisk, thoughtful, realized, vivid, crisp, distinct, and captivating. Words that need to be associated with Blood Song. Anthony Ryan's take on Epic Fantasy is a must read if for the pacing along. The book moves along while flashing back giving the present a context without drudging the reading though expositional mire.

After mainlining A Song of Ice and Fire last year, I thought I would take a break from Epic Fantasy--Ryan's Blood Song made me second guess my respite. I am eager, awaiting the next installment in the series. At least I won't have to wait as long for the next installment.
