"... Then it is fear itself, fear of self that I am writing about ... fear and guilt and their destruction of identity." (Shirley Jackson quote from the Laura Miller introduction)

Devastating and haunting story that plays with the psychological vs supernatural really well. It's not one over the other but how the two horrors exist and feed off of each other, specifically in . I really appreciated reading the version with Miller's introduction because I think it helped in shaping my perspective and understanding of the story. This book has scary moments (I was spooked!), but it's more atmospheric and builds its tension slowly. Here and there I would get lost in the pacing as the book meandered, but I really enjoyed it! The perfect fall read.
