The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst
5.0
I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I picked it up on a whim because it was on the New Aquisitions shelf at the library and caught my eye. I'd never heard of it before, but I read it in two days even though I worked a 12 hour shift right in the middle!
Objectively, the character development was lacking a bit for the important supporting characters and sometimes the prose was a bit simplistic at times. But, this feels like a YA series and I can forgive it for those because the system of magic in the world was unique and even though the ending was predictable, as were several subplots, the story played out well and with a good twist to how the ending that you knew was coming all along actually played out. (Don't want to give any spoilers!)
So, for anyone who likes YA fantasy (that isn't dystopian) with unique forms of magic/magical creatures, and a protagonist that is both determined and reluctant (and therefore very relatable) at the same time, this could be a good read for you!
