Where Are Your Boys Tonight?: The Oral History of Emo's Mainstream Explosion 1999-2008 by Chris Payne

emotional funny informative reflective fast-paced

I’d give this ten stars if I could. In these times of early 2000s pop-punk and emo nostalgia being trendy, reading this reminded me of all the things I loved about being 14 and listening to “From Under the Cork Tree” so many times that the CD was piping hot when I took it out of my Discman. The best moments came when I was reminded of things I’d nearly forgotten (like PureVolume.net??????).

The only thing I wish this book would have done more of is more pointedly discuss the situation with Jesse Lacey and Brand New, as well as other predatory men in the scene. It’s referred to several times, but it was such a pivotal moment to the scene and so representative of some of the truly heinous things that happened on these tours that it felt like a giant, giant miss to avoid digging into it.

But if the point of this book was to deliver nostalgia and good vibes, it absolutely worked. I loved it.
