I watched the movie before reading the book (the movie motivated me to read it).
Both the movie and the book should be treated as two separate entities. I liked some and disliked some stuff from each and they both had major differences.
The politics felt shallow and superficial in how it was explored in this book (considering it takes place in an ideal world with less bigotry?)and the writing got too fanfictiony in some places. However, the cheesy romance was nice to read. It was a good detox from reality to escape into a somewhat fantasy world where everything works out fine politically.
