The Lunatic Cafe by Laurell K. Hamilton
3.0
Trigger Warning: Threat of rape.
This one focuses on Shapeshifters & Lycanthropes. It's Christmastime and Anita has been dating Richard for a while. They run into Jean Claude at the opera, who reveals that Richard has been keeping secrets. His alpha wants him dead. Then Anita's called to the scene of a Shapeshifter murder. (With some truly horrible sheriff's department officers.) Then to a meeting of Lycanthropes and meets Richard's alpha, Marcus. (Doesn't this poor girl ever get to sleep?)
Edward is back! I don't know why but I'm entertained by him. I want a short story told by him.
The plot / mystery was rather complex, but again, there wasn't much investigating. Anita was too preoccupied with her love life. There was also little done with her magic.
Anita is just so abrasive and bitchy. She's so concerned about seeming tough. I liked her werewolf reporter friend but he's really turned into a wuss. All (okay most) of the Lycanthropes were horrible people.
I didn't like Richard much in this one. They made him so nice before, but not so much this time. I guess he's more real, but he's less likable, more annoying and controlling.
There were too many new Lycanthropes introduced. I couldn't keep the names straight. I had to keep flipping back trying to figure out who was who.
There was a particularly icky scene at the end. Anita is trapped in a cage with a changing shifter. It's unsure whether he's going to eat her or rape her.
The plot was needlessly complicated. It didn't even make sense.
