I found this book terrifying, disturbing and emotional. I am in awe of this strange story but also repulsed by the characters. I did not read anything about this book, even the blurb, before reading it. So I would like to give a PSA to future readers that this book covers some sensitive topics and contains vividly jarring scenes; you might want to check out some trigger warnings before proceeding.

This is a short, creative yet horrifying story about mental health, female bodily autonomy, misogyny, the meaning of choice, and social conformism. I found that the writing gripped it's cold claws into me and pulled me into the story while also leaving me feeling horrified. One part of me urgently wanted to put the book away, while another part couldn't tear myself away from the story as it seemed to spiral out of control.

I'm confused by people who say they 'loved' this book. I can't imagine 'loving' it, as the male characters are so repulsive/violent/perverted/exploitative, the story is so depressing and the feeling you're left with is one of emptiness and pain. That being said, I think it's an incredible book and  well-worth reading if you're in the appropriate headspace. Among many other topics cleverly condensed into this small book, Han Kang deftly explores issues around how women create coping mechanisms to survive in patriarchal societies and how society handles individuals who do no conform to its contemporary norms.

If you decide to read this book, be prepared for something nauseating, genuinely surreal, depressing and unceremoniously violent.
