Taming the Beast by Emily Maguire
5.0

Perfect representation of all things messed up and well thought through. Having it written in third person means no character has their actions justified. I gasped, recoiled, and sneered.

After a series of exploitative sexual experiences, Sarah's left craving love and control. She's willing to sacrifice the latter for the former, however, when the teacher who groomed her aged fourteen returns to her - and she's stuck as that fourteen year old girl willing to do anything he asks. Though their relationship was psychologically interesting, it's sick and Daniel takes advantage of Sarah's undying loyalty to him. You scream at her for letting him do most things he does, but understand her. His abuse is clear to see for the reader, and at no point is he sympathised for even when Sarah does. Sarah's reaction is extremely understandable because she's been brainwashed and conditioned to Daniel's approach to her with it being the very first.

A perfect character study.
