This review is for the 2nd edition published in 2013.

I can see why it is a go to book for professionals and a popular book for the average person who wants to go their own way. Clear, concise writing style that’s easy to read and does a great job breaking down more complex issues (eg why we binge, why certain approaches do or do not work). The first half is background information in binge eating disorders (BED) and the second half is a step-by-step guide on how to gain control over these issues.

I thought the background and scientific explanations behind BEDs was well written, and I enjoyed his commentary on diets/dieting and the negative role they play. As a dietitian I found little to criticize on those points. His step-by-step section on working through BED was broken down into simple stages that shouldn’t be overwhelming to most. I also appreciate his frequent reassurances to take your time and go at your own pace, as well as the section on dealing with lapses and relapses. The author also included a list of recommendations for further reading and resources which is pretty solid.

I’ve read through other reviews (good and bad) and didn’t have the same issues with vague information, outdated advice, etc. But I did read the 2nd edition and a lot of these reviews were regarding the 1st edition. So if you want to pick up this book, as a professional wanting to help your clients or just a regular person who is struggling with BED, I recommend the 2nd edition.
