Disappearance at Devil's Rock by Paul Tremblay

5.0

Another five star read from Paul Tremblay.

Looking back on my review for Head Full of Ghosts, I mentioned that that book continued to niggle at my brain long after I had finished it. Now, it's only been an hour since finishing Disappearance at Devil's Rock, but I am 100% sure that this one will also continue to niggle at my brain.

One of the main things that people mention about this one is that this is not so much a horror novel, but more of a mystery/suspense novel. I guess that's true, but there is something about this novel that bleeds into the supernatural. Maybe. And, there are some pretty intense things that happen. Either way you want to split hairs about it, this is one fine read. It's going on both my horror and mystery/suspense shelves.

Paul Tremblay paces this novel brilliantly. There is an underlying sense of dread throughout and as for the final couple of chapters, if it wasn't for my bladder demanding relief from the three green teas I'd consumed this morning, I wouldn't have been able to pull myself from it.

If I have one complaint, and I may be unique with this, it is this: I had a problem separating the characters of Luis and Josh. The reason for this may sound odd: as a reader, these are both 4-letter names that have a similar look in my brain for some reason...the L and J, both with s...
they just seemed too similar and I wish he would have named one of them Daniel or something.

But that's just a fun look into what goes on in the mind of yours truly. No stars docked.

This is a solid read by a talented storyteller. Highly recommended!
