Bitter Orange
by Claire Fuller
Reading Bitter Orange was interesting, because on the one hand, I didn't completely enjoy the story or characters; on the other, I was hungry to uncover what happened and follow Frances back in time. The unreliable nature of the narrator and the nature of storytelling in general kept me guessing when it came to motivations and events, and Fuller's ability to foreshadow certain things paid off. The prose itself never completely drew me in, although it did the job, and I did enjoy how the author crafted conversations where one character was speaking about one topic and the other something else entirely. I kept waiting for a bigger climax toward the end though, and the symbolism of Frances, Cara, and Peter as the oranges got a bit heavy-handed.
