The book gives thorough research on the formation of symbolist theatre and especially how Wagner's Gesamthkuntwerk theory influences the symbolist poets like Baudelaire and Mallarmé. What I like about the content is that the author also informs us of the impossibility of Gesamthkuntwerk by quoting Mallarmé's review.
The difficult part of this book is that there are a lot of theatrical works mentioned in every chapter, it is hard to follow the text if we have never heard or watched the piece, it could be tiresome to read the description when you also need to try to imagine the scene in your head. Therefore I rate it 4 stars. But generally, the information, the writing, the research, and the structure deserve 5 stars.
