The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski
1.0

Nirram only knows life in the Ward on an island contained within walls to the point where it's really annoying with how naive she is. She's was abandoned as a baby and grew up in the poor sector. Raven as taken her and 2 other girls but they work for her at the tavern and do other business. She sees her as a mother figure even tho she treats them otherwise. I really can't stand the MC.

Aden is Nirram's "lover" but she also sees him for Ravens errands. He claims to love her but is very controlling and she uses her body to placate him. This MC is so pathetic that she can't have her own thoughts and just does whatever anyone asks. It's only when she gets a nudge from one of the other girls to go with Sid, a traveler.

Sid, an outsider looking in, sees how others truely treat Nirram even tho she tells her that, Nirram is still very defensive over these people. The phrase "it is as it is" fits Nirram perfectly. Just do, don't think.

As Nirram spends more time with Sid she becomes less meek and more bold. The ending, the big reveal, was a huge let down. The entire book leading up to the ending was pretty much pointless. I'm so disappointed in this book.
