Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle
by Amelia Nagoski, Emily Nagoski
I recommend this book be read by all formerly gifted kids - especially formerly gifted girls. From such an early age we are taught to believe our value comes from what we do for others. And this book felt like a warming “I know” hug to that burnt-out perfectionist little kid I was and still kind of am.
Nagoski packages ways to fight your human giver syndrome and your mad lady in the attic with relatable stories and compassion. I’ve started personifying both of these aspects of myself.
I’ve already started mentally soothe those aspects whenever a panic attack or bad thoughts come along because of this book. It sounds so easy to do, but it’s hard to remember in the moment.
Sometimes, we just need to hear someone else say something. Nagoski is that person who reminded me to be gentle to myself and give to myself what I give to others so easily.
