Harry Potter och De Vises Sten by J.K. Rowling

5.0

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is an amazing book for readers of ALL ages. By now if you haven't read this series then you've either watched the movies or you are avoiding it for one reason or another. If that's the case I would highly recommend that you give it a try, because you're missing out on quality fiction.

Harry Potter is an orphan who lives with his Aunt and Uncle and their son Dudley. His family is basically a family of bullies and the poor boy makes a very sympathetic protagonist because, somehow, despite their nastiness he manages to be a decent kid. He's anything but normal, however. As Harry discover in this first installment he is a wizard and his eleventh birthday opens up a whole new world for him. A world of magic and wonder that he never knew existed.

Readers will enjoy discovering this magical world along with Harry, but the books are so much more than this magic that they are well known for. Rowling's writing is at times downright hilarious. Her descriptions of people are so honest and at the same time so amusing. I particularly loved the opening chapters of this first book because of the way in which the Dursleys encounter - and try to explain away - some of the weird things that are happening all around them before Harry is left on their doorstep. Some wonderful scenes that never made it into the movies will have you laughing or at the very least smiling.

The book is also a book about self-discovery and growth. It's about friendship and standing together. It has what you would expect from a "magic school" theme, but it also has some mystery that Harry and his friends uncover and investigate.

Overall, it's a great book that you don't want to miss and definitely worth several re-reads.
