The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
by Stephen King
I'm not sure I understand the flack this book has received over the years. I first read it around the time it came out. Sure it didn't particularly wow me like some of King's more popular works, but I don't think that was the intention of the story. Yes it's not horror! Arguably some of King's best writing comes from his non-horror stories. *cough cough* Different Seasons... Many of the stories in Night Shift, Lisey's Story. Just to name a few.
Anyway this was a great psychological thriller of what could happen to anyone who takes one too many steps off of a hiking path in a park. I've been there myself and upon realizing my mistake (I had to urinate in the middle of the night), I stopped and waited for my party to find me when the woke in the morning and saw I was missing. It reminded me of much earlier and less mature novel, The Long Walk. Although I would definitely rate The Long Walk higher in King's Ouevre, but that may just be nostalgia talking.
This would be a great Young Adult/Teen read for someone of that age bracket wanting to get into King. The language and subject matter are tame when compared some of his other works. Anyway, it's a well told story of a young girl who gets lost in the woods.
