Sophie's Choice
by William Styron
Outstanding. A rare example of when even a pedant like yours truly can overlook the oftentimes ridiculous language. If you thought Nabokov and Exley are guilty of "purple prose" Styron is a way greater offender. Despite the nagging feeling that he wrote this while alternating his gulps of bourbon with bigger gulps of the thesaurus, the story is haunting - a true page-turning thriller and a brilliant examination of the nature of guilt and masochism.
