This feels like one of those books that you would be asked to read in school and then be asked to look for symbolism. I don't know the context of this book, but the premise reminds me of [b:The Old Man and the Sea|2165|The Old Man and the Sea|Ernest Hemingway|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1329189714l/2165._SY75_.jpg|69741] because of the relationship between the shepherd and the boy (though I have not read Hemingway, I have just discussed the symbolism in the book). How the two act in synch as if the boy was an extension of the shepherd. The book doesn't really give incentive to actually analyze it in such way, though, so I don't actually know how 'deep' it is. I enjoyed the read though.
