Wish
by Sara Flanagan
Sara Flanagan's debut dark fantasy romance, Wish, is a seductive read that draws you in and leaves you spiral until the very last page.
Sara does a wonderful job of building this dark, sinister world that slowly comes into focus (don't expect to understand it all until the very end...she is keeping us on our toes!). Mora, trapped by a curse that demands she perform the wishes of whoever holds her flask, tries to escape from a devious bent on making a name for himself and controlling her world. However, as she tries to fight against her curse, she is drawn into a much larger story of fate, love, and betrayal.
The FMC, Mora, is female rage personified -- and honestly, she has every reason to be. I felt for her character. She spends much of her human life under an evil monster only to be cursed to serve different Keepers, who all demand wishes from her. She is haunted by memories of her past and her previous experiences. They are dark moments.
Zadriel was such a fun character to read about. Trapped under his own curse, Mora and Zadriel cross paths as they are control by the same repugnant villain (yes, REPUGNANT). Zadriel's story is slowly revealed and you find his childhood has been a dark one as he has been trapped for most of it. What I love most though is that Zadriel is a cinnamon roll with k*ller frosting. He is sweet, caring, and the perfect mate for Mora -- who needs that in her life.
Sara does a beautiful job of highlight their romance in the sweetest way amongst the much darker stories of their past and their current predicament. It makes you truly favor their romance (and the spice doesn't hurt either).
Please check the TWs and CWs on this one as it does deal with some darker themes, especially in Mora and Zadriel's pasts.
4.5/5
