As an avid fan of Mari Andrew's first book - Am I There Yet? - this book failed to compare. The descriptive writing seemed forced in a way which often felt jarring. The metaphors felt much the same. Sometimes it just isn't effective to make an anecdote of a life experience as much as we want to.
The highlight was describing her time in a Spanish hospital. Becoming livid with your limitations and projecting that fury on others - supportive others or otherwise - is something I found comfort in. It was unlikeable and brilliant.
I understand this niche style of writing, but because I saw it done well in Am I There Yet?, I could identify the shortcomings in this iteration even when I didn't want to.
