Bitten by Kelley Armstrong

4.0

I assumed it was going to be some clichéd PNR novel with romance and some half-assed sub plot.

I was really surprised with this one.

For starters, there is no half-assery with Kelley Armstrong. She did everything all the way. The plot was very detailed and remained noticing throughout. I don't know, maybe it was the characters, maybe the unpredictability of the plot that kept me wanting to turn the page. The setting was detailed and unique. And the ending was downright perfect.

The characters.... They deserve a review of their own. The Paranormal Genre is chalkfull of macho male shifters strutting their stuff and slipping in some sexist and degrading comments like it's nobody's business) Despite Bitten being àn almost/completely male dominated novel, it never felt like it came off as some weird or unbalanced. Each character was pleasantly unique and very memorable.

The romance?

Clayton is like the aforementioned macho males who strut their stuff. He pines after Elena like a tween after boy band concert tickets. And other stuff. He isn't usually the type of character I would like. I shouldn't be liking him. But I do. Because somehow, his pining doesn't annoy me. The way he does it, or rather why he does it makes it so beautiful. Also, he is downright crazy with his murderous tendencies but I find him really awesome. He is tough but he isn't insecure about his own masculinity like many (and you know who) males in the PRN genre. He has confidence in Elena and isn't always second guessing her intelligence or her capabilities. And overall, for someone who pines, he gives a lot of space to Elena. He is really respective of her choices and her role as a member in their pack. Really rare in any genre, really.

PNR novels have a shitload of characters and sub- plot lines. Most of them all clump up together in my head, or I ignore others completely, but the plot and he characters really held my attention

I feel like this book could be taken a step further so I haven't added that last star.
