A Thousand Steps into Night by Traci Chee

I really wanted to like this but it was so difficult to get through! The pacing was so off and the entire first half of the book was a total slog. Part two introduced time travel, which got more and more confusing as the story went on.

It was hard to become immersed in this fantasy at all, because there were so many things that took me out of it. The many footnotes brought what was already a slow story to a complete halt every time I stopped to read them, to the point that I just started skipping them. Couldn’t they have just been written into the story itself? Additionally, this was way too heavy-handed on the gender commentary. It was pretty easy to glean in the subtext right from the beginning that this was a man’s world and it’s unfair for the women living in it. I didn’t need it spelled out over and over the way that it was.

I felt pretty strongly that I was going to rate this two stars, but I did really enjoy the ending so I bumped it up to three.
