Note: I read this before Priory, so I can’t compare A Day of Fallen Night to Priory.
I thought this book was going to be about women empowerment, but it turns out it’s more about motherhood. The first half of the story felt slow. Even after a few hundred pages, there was nothing particularly special—like, if those pages were cut, I could still follow the story just fine. I barely felt any emotional attachment to the characters; it only happened once or twice.
I used to hate Glorian for her clumsy and selfish actions, but later I realized she’s also a victim of her kingdom’s stupid rules and her parents.
On the positive side, I liked how the Priory has different family roles (at least different from those in my society): women go into battle and become warriors, while men handle household tasks and support the warriors on the battlefield. I also liked the romantic relationships between the couples—there wasn’t too much, and there was no unnecessary affection. My favorite dynamic was between Dumai and Nikeya. I feel bad for their future, though.
