Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

3.0

That was a fun read, as long as we remember it's aimed at 12-year-olds. That means we don't have to require seamless worldbuilding or a complex, intricately plotted storyline.

I am amazed at how many readers don't like this because the protagonist isn't a good guy. Or because some of the characters have been raised to dislike the Other Side. If you rule those out, you're going to miss at least half of all the stories ever told. The Old Testament is full of incest and murder and smiting, not to mention genocide. You gonna ditch your Bible?

I was a tad disappointed to see that Artemis has a butler, that generic large, loyal, violent, capable manservant, who usually served one's father in The War and killed many enemies but Doesn't Like To Talk About It. Too many young geniuses have one of those. Still waiting for an author to have a protector who works some other way.

Root and Foaly were an interesting application of stock human personalities on the fairy structure.
I might read one more of these to see if Holly develops; she has potential but didn't really get to do much here.
