In Praise of Shadows
by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki
Examination of the appreciation for shadows and light in both the mundanities of everyday Japanese lifestyles and special cultural phenomenona. Notable examples were the lacquerware, candy, candlelight, and the bathroom. Beautiful descriptions of the light effects of shoji paper. Tanizaki also brings up the dilemma of existence in what is seen and unseen, as well as the balance between traditional purism and comforts of modernity. There are some female-objectifying overtures.
