Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers
5.0

“From the ground, we stand. From our ships, we live. By the stars, we hope.”

Super sad that this one is over (for only a while, I hope). The three books can still be read in any order.

Record of a Spaceborn Few is again a collection of small characters' stories. Maybe there is one too many, but in the end, I preferred it that way. Galactic equilibrium is yet again neither restored nor disturbed. People just go about their daily lives and they're totally insignificant in the very grand scheme of things. Or maybe they're not. And that's the hope.

What I really liked about this installment was the depiction of a species' pride in the face of being a charity case. It really makes you think about traditions and change from a different perspective.

“Our species doesn’t operate by reality. It operates by stories. Cities are a story. Money is a story. Space was a story, once. A king tells us a story about who we are and why we’re great, and that story is enough to make us go kill people who tell a different story. Or maybe the people kill the king because they don’t like his story and have begun to tell themselves a different one.”
