Nachtduik by Megan Goldin

challenging dark reflective tense

4.0

First book of the month and of the Amazing Readathon. The Night Swim by Megan Goldin touches a dark subject, but it was done so well I gave it a solid 4 stars!

The structure of the book keeps it interesting. The main character Rachel attends the court hearings of a rape case in a formerly small town. As a journalist, she records for her crime podcast, while at the same time receiving letters from someone that is also in the town, about a mysterious drowning 25 years ago. Curious as she is, she of course starts investigating that too.

Since it's a dark subject, I really admired how the author put it to the page. It was challenging, reflective, and at times tense. People from the town, the internet, they all have an opinion about the rape case. The questions asked make you think about how unfair cases like these are for the victims, about how the public opinions have an impact. This philosophical discussion through the podcast was very interesting, and well done.

The second mystery, given to you through the letters, and Rachels investigation, soon feel somewhat similar. All seen through the eyes of a little sister, we know what's coming, but the words are not there. Yet.

How will the two intertwine? Will they at all? And what will the verdict in the court be? Does the letter writer get her answers? This book keeps you going till the end, and very much past your bed time.
