The Compound
by Aisling Rawle
3.5 eerie- like an adult Lord of The Flies meets Love Island Or Big Brother.
Aisling Rawle’s The Compound starts with the glossy allure of a television dating show—ten men, ten women, and the promise of ever-escalating prizes—but quickly reveals a darker undercurrent. Set in a near-future that hints at global collapse, the novel confines its drama to a remote desert “compound”. Narrator Lily is beautiful young adult who is floundering-how else would she have wound up on this show?! Her point of view is unsettling as we witness the contestants’ descent into rivalry and vanity. It makes you question consumerism, our culture's obsession with 15 minutes of fame, and constant need for the next thing.
