Dear Martin by Nic Stone

3.0

This is a culturally/politically important book that raises interesting questions about the difference between tolerance and resistance. The characters are lovable and the plot even moved me to tears. However, the dialogue felt unrealistic, and overall, the writing was more like reading a web comic or a screenplay. Super punchy, no real flow of prose, and incredibly abrupt pacing. Initially, I was giving the style the benefit of the doubt because I believe this book was intended for younger readers. But after finishing it, I think even younger readers would have benefited from the narrator unpacking some of the heavier moments more thoroughly. I might be a bit harsh in rating it 3 stars, but I would still recommend it to others.
