The Long Walk by Stephen King

5.0

A loose adaptation on Shirley Jackson’s ‘The Lottery’, The Long Walk is just as unpredictable and horrific. A group of one hundred young boys (you must be under eighteen) start at the Maine/Canada border and walk south. You must walk a minimum of four miles an hour. Fall below that and you receive a warning. After three warnings you are shot by the impassive soldiers following behind in a half-track. The last Walker wins.

The story got its claws into me and didn't let go. Each boy’s mentality is tested not only by their own desires for sleep and food, but by each other’s mind games.

I loved the ending of The Long Walk. It's much darker than most King endings but in line with most of the Bachman book endings. This is one reason why King chose the Bachman pen name, so he didn't feel obligated to end things as positively. I would recommend this to fans of The Hunger Games and Battle Royale.
