I love Locke & Key, and it's hard to imagine a stronger start. We begin with
an incredibly traumatic experience
and have nothing but instant empathy for the Locke family, all of whom are well-written and feel like real people as they struggle with the fallout of
their father's violent murder
. The plot of this volume is kind of a slow burn, and
the arch-antagonist takes a back seat
. I love the way Joe Hill writes his villains - they're uncompromising, truly nasty pieces of work. The underlying mythology of the series, though not as fully developed as it will be later, is intriguing.

I can see Gabriel Rodriguez's art style being divisive, but I'm fully on board. It's stylized, incredibly detailed, and does a great job supporting the story.
