Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire

This little novella was a good idea that seemed to be half baked and written in haste. It's more like an outline for a story or series and jumps around with too many ideas that don't flow well or stick together. There were several plot lines that were just thrown together and the author couldn't pick just one to focus on. It left the story disjointed. There was also a lot of explanations that instead of clarifying the world the characters inhabit just confuse the reader. Last the reader must suspend belief in reality because the author tries to write the story as if where taking place in the modern day but there is no way that would work for the MC's life or lack there of to exist without major changes to society. (A shit ton of ghosts hang around an area for decades and never age and no one notices, the same thing with witches). No real world building.

The story is a bit depressing (lots of mention of suicide and the taking of life) and very very repetitive (we read repeatedly about the MCs sisters death and witches are bad and again her sister's early death). However the characters are interesting even if they show no development and aren't fully fleshed out. The pacing was effective for the length, but again it was really more of an outline for a longer story or series.
