Yuri is My Job!, Volume 3 by Miman
5.0
You know how in 2019, we're all still surrounded by that one stereotype we haven't been able to shake for years and years? You know the one--the pretty, trendy girl who's really into fashion and makeup and maybe even popular, trendy things. She's always treated like a shallow, stupid bimbo who often throws herself at guys, is many times some poorly veiled vehicle for slut-shaming, and is mean for no reason to the heroine, who is totally unlike her because she's a girl with a BRAIN!
...I've seen this character in many different variations, all equally boring and irritating, and unfortunately a popular choice with women authors, as well.
Fortunately, this comic managed to subvert that. Their trendy teen--in their slang referred to as a "gyaru"--is immediately hit with all the popular assumptions people normally make when they see her "type." But she's actually treated like a human being. Can you believe it? She avidly *gasp* reads books, is keen and intuitive, and is very observant of the people around her. She'll call out BS when she has to. I love her so much, especially because even now I still long for seeing more characters like her.
I need to freeze this book now and make a hearty stew of it that I can consume in tiny portions in order to survive through the cold, unforgiving winter of popular sexism.
